If a picture is worth a thousand words, then can fashion garments- visual experience in their own right- also tell a story? What about a pair of jeans? L.A.-based company AGOLDE believes they have the answer. Spearheaded by Jerome Dahan, the label specializes in denim wear, and refers to each of their collections as “stories”. The label draws inspiration from both contemporary and vintage styles, particularly from styles present in youth culture. One of their most recent collections, or “stories”, draws particular inspiration from the 90s, and yet still reflects AGOLDE’s central desire to communicate the “irreverence” and individuality of L.A. while still producing a comfortable and high-quality product. So, just what kind of story is AGOLDE telling about the 1990s, and how can it be applied to the modern fashion market? The denim in this collection features many of the denim trends popular in today’s fashion world; the collection contains solely mid and high rise bottoms, and some pair of jeans feature other popular motifs, such as rolled cuffs and distressed fabric. However, the 90’s influence is hard to miss, with the collection favoring loose and classic fits of jeans, as opposed to the bootcut and skinny cuts popularized during the 2000s and 2010s. A sensation of the 90’s can also be detected in the washes of the jeans, which are restricted to different shades of blue; black, white, and other color washes are not present within AGOLDE’s narrative, allowing for this somewhat modernized collection to nevertheless feel vintage.
